Health education for skin cancer prevention in elderly

Introduction: Skin cancer, one of the most incident neoplasms in Brazil, demands prevention strategies based on accessible education, with emphasis on the geriatric population. This age group exhibits increased risk due to cumulative sun exposure, cutaneous senescence, and low adherence to photoprotection measures. University extension, by promoting interaction between students and social realities, fostering informed self-care, emerges as a privileged space for health promotion and disparity mitigation. Objective: To report the experience of an educational action on prevention and early recognition of skin cancer, conducted with elderly individuals in the extension project "Health Education: strategies for prevention of chronic diseases in the elderly." Experience Report: The activity was conducted by five medical students with a group of seven older adults at a childcare center in Belo Horizonte during the second semester of 2024. The workshop followed an expository-dialogue format, using accessible language and illustrative images. Risk factors, warning signs, preventive measures, and safe sun-exposure times were addressed. At the end, a quiz activity was carried out, with 100% correct answers, followed by the distribution of sunscreen samples and symbolic prizes. Final Considerations: The action demonstrated the positive impact of health education on awareness and behavior change in the elderly population, in addition to promoting ethical, human, and integrative experiences for students, reaffirming the value of extension as a formative and transformative practice.
